Santa Luzia, Portugal

After two nights in Tavira we drove west 5 kilometers and visited the very small town of Santa Luzia which is known as the "Octopus Capital" of the Algarve.  The fishermen of the village have turned their talents solely to catching octopus, considered quite a delicacy.  To catch octopi, clay pots are lowered to the sea bed in the shallow water and the octopi are lured into the pots from which they can't remove themselves. The fishermen winch the pots up into the boats where the octopi are removed.

We walked one of the docks where boats were tied up.  The colors are a photographers dream.  We had a delicious lunch of octopus stew at one of the restaurants that lined the harbor area.  Deciding we were not ready to go back to Olvera we found an internet cafe, got online, saw the town Olháo on the map (abut 15 km away),  and made a hotel reservation.  One more night on the Algarve sounded like a good idea.

Below are photos of this brief stay in Santa Luzia.  The next blog will feature Olháo.

Boats just waiting to be discovered so they can star in the next animated feature coming to a theater near you...

We're surmising that the rope superstructure on the aft decks is there to contain traps and nets

Great "logo"

Love the horns on the pilothouse
